In 1887, a tobacco manufacturer in Covington, Kentucky, found an unlikely ally in mysticism. To sell his Open Hand fine-cut tobacco, he printed a palmistry chart, a map of the human hand promising revelation: “You can see and know yourself as others see and know you.” The result was a strange marriage of science, superstition, and salesmanship, where fortune-telling met American commerce.
