Between them, an entire cultural rivalry is served: beef and pudding versus garlic and finesse, pints versus perfume.
Originally etched by Thomas Rowlandson and published by London printmaker Matthew Darly, the piece satirized the late-Georgian obsession with national character through food, a visual essay on appetite, identity, and how each country imagined the other’s table. Two and a half centuries later, the joke still lands.
