A humble detail from a spectacular 19th-century botanical book gets a second life as gift wrap.
This tiny magenta-on-pink grid was preserved from an 1879 edition of Nederlandsche Flora en Pomona, a lavish Dutch work on horticulture and fruit cultivation. Published by J.B. Wolters for the Pomological Society of Boskoop, its two volumes paired practical writings on cultivated plants and fruit with 81 full-page chromolithographs drawn from nature by botanical artist Abraham Jacobus Wendel. Apples, pears, peaches, grapes, berries and flowers all received the full Victorian treatment.
Our pattern comes from the less celebrated paper surrounding that extraordinary printed work: a minute, gingham-like grid that feels remarkably chic nearly 150 years later. Its closely set magenta marks against soft pink create an almost textile-like texture from a distance, with the charming irregularity of antique printing visible up close.
A little bit archival, a little bit unexpected, and very good with ribbon.
• Size: 28.75″ × 19.75″ (73 × 50.2 cm)
• A set of 3 sheets
• Thickness: 70# uncoated text
• Printing on one side
• White reverse side
• Matte finish
